Programa
UNIT 1: Introduction- Economic geology of non-metallic deposits and applied 
sedimentology-Basics and definitions.
Sand and sandstones-environment of deposition. Sand and 
sandstones-application and deposits. Siliceous raw materials (excluding 
sand)- application and deposits. Heavy mineral analysis basics and advanced 
methods. Heavy mineral analysis in sedimentology. Case histories of  heavy 
mineral analysis : provenance analysis, diagenesis, hypogene alteration). 
Case histories of  heavy mineral analysis: modeling the depositional regime 
(Eh, pH...)

UNIT 2: Placer deposits and stream sediments as an “ore guide”. Case 
histories placer deposits : tin ,titanium, gemstone, gold, 
platinum-group-element (PGE) placers. Case histories heavy minerals as ore 
guide deposits (black sands and white deposits – exploration for pegmatites).
  The section of applied mineralogy and sedimentology of the Federal 
Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources

-       Methods and techniques (CAMSIZER, Image analysis, SEM-EDX/WDX, IR 
spectroscopy, DTA, CEC, surface analysis, N2-BET.)
-       Projects and programs in material science, soil science, economic 
geology and applied sedimentology Cooperation with universities, surveys 
and industry
UNIT 3: Clay and claystones-environment of deposition. Argillitisation 
–environment of formation. Clay minerals and phyllosilicates-application 
and deposits. Advanced methods in clay mineralogy: Rietveld calculation, 
PIMA etc. Isotope geology of phyllosilicates
UNIT 4: Dioxin in kaolin. Experiment results of natural allophane and 
synthesis of allophane and imogolite with special reference to deposits in 
Ecuador. Bentonites exploration, application and beneficiation. 
Argillaceous barrier systems in final waste disposals. Microstructural 
investigation of clay minerals. Clay minerals and slope stability in 
sediments in landslide areas.
UNITE 5: Barium-strontium deposits. Aluminium-phosphate-sulfate minerals – 
environment of formation and deposits. Capturing digital data in the field 
and terrain analysis (geomorphology and applied sedimentology for 
environmental and extractive geology). Terrain analysis of land forms of 
tropical to suptropical terrains. Terrain analysis of  land forms in 
the  steppe and desert
