"Static and Dynamic Deformation of South America from the Great
Maule Earthquake Recorded by Continuous and High-Rate GPS"
The M8.8 Maule Earthquake of Feb 27, 2010, is the first great
earthquake to be well recorded by a large number of nearby continuous
and high-rate GPS stations. The co-seismic static deformation field,
determined by continuous GPS stations, spans the whole width of the
South American continent in the latitude band of the earthquake. Strong
motion GPS seismograms, estimated using high-rate GPS data, show
dynamic displacements of up to 40 cm at periods of ~60 seconds in San
Juan and Mendoza. The High-Rate GPS data will be useful in the
estimation of the dynamic rupture history of the earthquake while the
traditional GPS data will constrain the total offset and post-seismic
behavior of the system.
