[Geoinfo] The "Global Earthquake Model" Program

El Global Science Forum de la Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD), ha gestado un esfuerzo mundial conjunto entre
organizaciones estatales, internacionales, académicas y privadas
denominado Global Earthquake Model (GEM).

Este proyecto ha comenzado a funcionar recientemente y dentro  de los
denominados "Componentes Científicos" del mismo, se ha convocado durante
2009 a la presentación de iniciativas a nivel mundial sobre los siguientes
tópicos:

. Global Active Fault and Seismic Source Database
. Global Historical Catalogue and Database
. Global Instrumental Seismic Catalogue
. Global Geodetic Strain Rate Model
. Global Ground-Motion Prediction Equations (GMPE)

Respecto a la primer temática, el GEM ha decidido financiar recientemente
para los próximos tres años a la propuesta "Faulted Earth", cuyo resumen y
cuadro de organización se indica en el archivo adjunto.

Este proyecto pretende actualizar e integrar bajo estándares comunes los
diferentes mapas y bases de datos existentes a escala mundial, así como la
compilación de áreas aún sin desarrollo. Se tratará asimismo de
desarrollar parámetros sismogénuicos y modelos de fuente (source models)
para estructuras consideradas sismogénicas principalmente en cercanías de
áreas urbanas y/o facilidades críticas.

The Global Earthquake Model (GEM): MOTIVATION

Over half a million people died in the last decade due to earthquakes and
tsunamis, most of these in the developing world, where the risk is
increasing due to rapid population growth and urbanisation.

However in many earthquake-prone regions no risk models exist, and even
where models do exist, they are inaccessible. Better risk awareness can
reduce the toll that earthquakes take by leading to better construction,
improved emergency response, and greater access to insurance.

The 2005 UN Hyogo declaration states that mitigation of risk to natural
hazards is a crucial criterion for sustainable development. The study of
earthquake risk can contribute to mitigation of earthquake risk.

The Global Science Forum of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD) has thus called for the development of global,
open-source risk assessment. In response to this need, the Global
Earthquake Model (GEM) will provide an authoritative standard for
calculating and
communicating earthquake hazard and risk GEM will provide state-of-the-art
open source software and databases as a necessary basis for reliably
mapping,monitoring, and communicating earthquake risk.

Different types of software and tools will be available, adapted to the
needs of various stakeholder groups. In order to achieve this, GEM will be
based on a combination of national, regional and global elements, and will
integrate developments on the forefront of scientific and engineering
knowledge of earthquakes as well as IT processes and infrastructure.
