ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF RESEARCH

The Department of Environmental & Occupational Health within the Robert
Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work (RSCPHSW) at Florida
International University seeks a highly motivated individual for a
non-tenured Assistant Scholar/Scientist/Engineer (with a working title of
Assistant Professor of Research) in the area of water supply, sanitation and
hygiene . Although the selected applicant will hold an appointment in the
College of Public Health & Social Work, the selected applicant will be
expected to devote substantial efforts in support of projects within the
Global Water for Sustainability (GLOWS) Program. The GLOWS program is a
consortium led by Florida International University (FIU) and financed by the
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) working to
increase social, economic, and environmental benefits to people of
developing countries through on–the-ground implementation of integrated
water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, improvement of water
management practices, and building of local capacity. As part of this
interdisciplinary effort, the College of Public Health & Social Work now
invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Research in water supply,
sanitation and hygiene.

mission of the RSCPHSW is to enhance the public's health by conducting
innovative research, training future leaders and health professionals from
diverse backgrounds, translating research into policy and practice, and
serving our local communities as well as communities around the world,
especially in Latin America and the Caribbean.

QUALIFICATIONS

The position requires a PhD degree in water and/or engineering sciences with
experience in the development and management of water/environmental programs
and projects. The selected candidate will be expected to work as a water
supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) specialist and should be able to
conduct his/her duties with limited supervision. Candidates are expected to
have the ability to travel internationally. He or she should be able to
deliver analytical outputs and reports of satisfactory quality, in both
English and French in a timely manner. Excellent written and oral
communication skills in French are necessary, since more than 50% of the
GLOWS programs are in francophone countries. Experience with international
multi-agency water related development projects and/or policies and strategy
is required. The candidate will be expected to have a strong interest or
experience in conducting interdisciplinary research, experience in
identifying hazards, quantifying exposures, assessing risk, and safety and
sustainability of the water resources; experience in sustainable water
systems in urban and rural areas; experience in water issues in the face of
climate variability and population growth; teaching experience at
post-graduate level and be willing and able to teach a variety of topics
related in the field of water supply and sanitation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The selected candidate will report directly to the GLOWS Director.
Furthermore, the selected candidate will: Supervise and support the
implementation of water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects
simultaneously in multiple developing countries, develop, support, or
coordinate the WASH programs and projects overseas; develop or review
project implementation guidelines for field project coordination units;
oversee technical and financial reporting of assigned WASH programs/project;
conduct or coordinate assessments of different delivery methods of water and
sanitation services to the urban poor, based on local experiences and best
practices; play a lead role interacting with the representatives of the
contracting agencies or partner organizations, and/or local authorities in
the project area; and undertake other related tasks as required by the GLOWS
Directorate.

Salary scale is between $80,000 - $85,000 (depending on expertise and
experience).
