1 PhD position in metamorphic petrology
The Institute of Mineralogy and Geochemistry at the University of Lausanne
(Switzerland) invites applications for a PhD position. The project is
named “Miocene intrusions in Southern Patagonia: Contact-metamorphism and
deformation at the Fitz Roy Plutonic Complex (Patagonia, Argentina)”. The
candidate should have a strong background in petrology. Knowledge of
structural geology is an asset. The field area is in the spectacular
mountainous landscape of the famous Fitz Roy National Park. Knowledge
of basic mountaineering, and a solid foundation in fieldwork is expected.
The objective of this project is to study the contact-aureole of the Fitz
Roy Plutonic Complex (Argentina) to better understand its emplacement
mechanism and its localization with respect to the Miocene plate tectonics
in Patagonia.
This is a continuation of a project in which we studied the igneous
history of the Fitz Roy Plutonic complex - we established precise age data
for the individual intrusive pulses, as well as the geochemistry and phase
petrology of the area. In this follow-up project we intend to investigate
(a) nature and extent of contact-metamorphism and the relationship
to regional metamorphism, (b) the nature and age of deformation of the
host rocks (i.e. regional vs. magmatic deformation). Methods applied will
include, among others, field work (2 seasons), phase petrology
(pseudosection, phase petrology grids, cationexchange thermometry), stable
isotope studies including thermometry, microstructural investigation (EBSD
& CL imaging) in combination with geochemistry (Laser ICP-MS)and dating
(Ar-Ar, U/Pb)This project is funded by the Swiss National Science
Foundation for a period of three years (2+1).
The starting date is October 2011. Applications are accepted until the
position is filled,but we prefer to receive applications before July 1.
