Postdoctoral positions
The Center for Geohazards Studies, University at Buffalo (UB; geohazards.buffalo.edu), is seeking two postdoctoral researchers who will participate, through
research, in the development of a facility for large-scale experiments
related to
geological hazards such as volcanic eruptions and geological mass flows.
Specific research projects can be defined by the successful
applicants, in collaboration with their sponsoring faculty member, and
can involve a combination of lab- and
field-scale experimental work in topics including, but not limited to:
sediment gravity flows and deposits (e.g., debris avalanches debris
flows, pyroclastic density currents), volcanic conduit processes
(magmatic and phreatomagmatic), magma-
water interaction, volcanic jets and plumes, and tephra dispersion and
deposition.  We are especially interested in candidates for the
following two topics:  (1) Use of numerical models and statistical
methodology to design experiments for model
validation and development of better physics models for geologic flows,
and participation in experiments; (2) Design and execution of
experimental research on magma-water interaction in dynamic geological
configurations.   Applicants are
required to have Ph.D. prior to the postdoctoral appointment, in the
following or closely related fields:  Geology, Geophysics, Physics,
Applied Mathematics, Civil or Geological Engineering, with experience in
 geological fluid dynamics and/or
mechanics of geological materials.  Application letters should include a
short (1-2 page) description of the type of research the candidate
would like to conduct.  Selection of candidates will begin on 31 August
2012.  The positions are full time
(12 months) with a duration of up to two years.  Apply online at www.ubjobs.buffalo.edu, position # 1200303.to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano en asu.edu. Please do not send attachments.
