I agree with both Bob Holdsworth and Dirk Nieuwland
That is why I think the action, if any, has to be professional, formal,
and to come from a high level rather than from a bunch of irritated
scientists.

Dear All,
I agree with Bob Holdsworth that we must be very cautious in what we do.
I also could not agree more with the general sentiment about this
judgement in Italy.
Being involved with stability of underground age storages and risks of
induced seismicity, I can see myself and geoscientists like me (in a
worst case scenario), in an "Italian position" if this becomes rule
rather than exception. As a result safety associated with geological
projects (underground or at surface or associated with natural
phenomena) will be at risk.

Dear Colleagues,
Instead of shaking our heads we ought to get in action.
There should to be a formal petition with a letter written by
specialists and hopefully signed by a large number of Earth Scientists.
This should be done not only to defend the convicted Italian scientist
but also for all scientists making forecasts, prognoses and predictions
in natural processes with inherently low probability of occurrence.
This case will make a dangerous precedent: scientist will be penalized
