PhD position in the Structural Geology Group

Rheology of Mafic Fault Rocks

In this project we want to explore the brittle-viscous-transition of mafic
fault rocks assuming a simultaneous interplay of fundamentally different
types of mechanisms (friction controlled - temperature controlled –
microstructurally controlled).

The core of the study consists of creep experiments carried out on
synthetic fault rocks (solid medium Griggs apparatus, rock deformation
lab, Tromsø) and quantitative microstructure analysis (shape and grain
size distribution, phase composition, presence of amorphous material,
etc.). The deformed material will be analyzed with element maps at the
field emission SEM, on the microprobe at Basel University and using FIB
and TEM analysis at Utrecht University. For 3-D investigations we will use
X-ray tomography at the PSI; and nano-indentation experimens will be
performed at EMPA in Thun.

This project is based at Basel University under the main supervision of
Prof. Dr. Renée Heilbronner and will be carried out in collaboration with:

Tromsø University (Prof. Holger Stünitz) for experimental work,
Utrecht University (Prof. Martyn Drury) for TEM and FIB,
Paul Scherrer Institute (Prof. Marco Stampanoni) for X-ray tomography, and
Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Dr.
Johann Michler) for nano-indentation.

The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for three
years, starting as soon as possible.

Requirements:

The successful candidate must hold an MSc degree or equivalent in Earth
Sciences. He or she should have a solid background in Structural Geology
and good technical and laboratory skills. We prefer a person who is well
organized, who likes to work in the lab, who does not mind traveling
between Switzerland, Utrecht and Tromsø, and who is fit to collaborate
efficiently with the different research groups. During semesters, the
successful candidate will have to serve as teaching assistant for
undergraduate courses in Basel.

Application / Dead line:

Please send application before December 1st, 2012
to Prof Dr. Renée Heilbronner (renee.heilbronner en unibas.ch)
