Geochemical Modeling of Mineral Weathering at the Catchment Scale

Greetings Sergio Andres Bea,
"Uppsala University PhD Position #1 of 2: Geochemical Modeling of Mineral
Weathering at the Catchment Scale" has been added by Kevin Bishop to
Listserve - CZEN on CZEN.org.
PhD: Geochemical Modeling of Mineral Weathering at the Catchment Scaleat
Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences.
Subject: Greater demands for bioenergy will place increasing stress on boreal
forests, including the
possibility of further surface water acidification. Improved quantification
of mineral weathering can improve society’s ability to manage the goal
conflict between bioenergy and the acidity status of forest waters.
This project aims at constraining the capacity of mineral weathering to
counterbalance acidification pressures, including biomass harvest, in boreal
forest catchments. This research will be conducted within a larger, flagship
Swedish research network (www.slu.se\qwarts.se [1]). This project will use
state of the art modeling of hydrology and geochemistry, supported by isotope
techniques to quantify weathering on very well characterized sites. This will
push forward the frontiers in our ability to
define the weathering in acidification sensitive catchments.
The PhD student will work in closely with research groups in Lund,
Strasbourg, Umeå and Lancaster.
Qualifications required: We are looking for persons with university degrees
in engineering, natural sciences or comparable with a focus on
geochemistry. Experience with geochemical modeling and stable isotopes are
additional merits. Strong motivation and capacity for independent work are
important qualities. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written
English.
PhD education, also called research or third-level education, normally takes
4 years full time. The position can involve up to 20% Departmental work,
commonly teaching at basic or advanced levels. This work is added to the 4
years of PhD studies so a PhD position is commonly 5 years. More information
on research education at Uppsala University can be found at
ttp://www.teknat.uu.se/cms/en/ [2].
Information about the Department of Earth Sciences can be found at
http://www.geo.uu.se/ [3]. Information about Swedish postgraduate studies is
given in the Handbook for postgraduate students [4].
How to apply: We ask the applicant to attach a letter explaining why you are
interested in this Ph.D.. The application must also include a CV, copies of
exams and list of courses including the grades obtained, a copy of the
undergraduate thesis (or a draft thereof), as well as names of two reference
persons.
For further information about the position, please contact Dr. Stephan
Köhler, (stephan.kohler en slu.se [5]) or
Kevin Bishop +46-70-638-2517 (kevin.bishop en geo.uu.se [6]). Union
representatives are Anders Grundström, SACO (Swedish Confederation of
Professional Associations), phone +46 18 471 5380 and Carin Söderhäll,
TCO/ST (Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees), phone +46 18 471

Employees), phone

You are welcome to submit your application no later than 1 May 2013, UFV-PA
2013/833. Use the link below to access the application form.
