Estimados colegas,

Buenos días. Les agradecería difundir lo más ampliamente este aviso para
dos cargos académicos jornada completa en nuestro Departamento de
Geología, en las áreas de petrología y volcanología.

Two faculty positions, on physical petrology and volcanology

The Department of Geology ( www.geologia.uchile.cl ) at the Faculty of Physical
and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Chile
(FCFM, http://ingenieria.uchile.cl/), is seeking exceptional candidates for
two permanent full time faculty positions on (1) petrology and (2)
volcanology, both emphasizing on physical processes focusing on Andean
orogeny. The successful candidates should have expertise (supported by
high rank ISI-journal articles and scientific projects) to conduct
fundamental research on (1) physical petrology of igneous and/or
metamorphic processes, or (2) volcanology and magmatic systems, both
associated to Andean-type subduction regime.

The Faculty holds more than a dozen of departments including Geology,
Geophysics, Civil and Mining Engineering, among others. Earth Science
research at the University of Chile has been recently ranked among the
World’s 100 best programs, according to QS World Universities Ranking.
The Department offers undergraduate, M.Sc. and PhD. degrees. Analytical
facilities hosted in the Department include, among others, geochemistry
and mineralogy laboratories (SEM, TEM, FTIR, LA-MC-ICP-MS, fission tracks
and fluid/gas geochemistry laboratories), paleomagnetism, analogue
modelling and marine geology-sedimentology laboratories.

Research will focuses on Andean magmatism and/or geodynamics, with
applications on geothermics, economic geology, tectonics, and geological
hazards, among others. It is expected developing strong collaborative
work within the Department and with other units of the Faculty.

Applications must be sent to Dr. Carlos Palacios, Academic Director at
FCFM (sediraca en ing.uchile.cl)
and to Dr. Gabriel Vargas, head of the Department of Geology
(gvargas en ing.uchile.cl). A
statement of academic interests and planning research on areas (1) or
(2), teaching and outreach activities to be developed over the next years
must be added. Additionally, applicants will need to provide three
academic references from recognized researchers. The selection of
candidates will be made upon merit. Spanish proficiency is desirable, but
not required at the time of the application.

Net, after-tax salary will start at about US$50,000 per year for
Assistant Professors, commensurate with experience. Specific questions
should be addressed to Dr. Gabriel Vargas
(gvargas en ing.uchile.cl) and
Dr. Victor Maksaev
(vmaksaev en ing.uchile.cl). The
successful candidate is expected to start in the new position during the
second half of 2014.

Deadline for applications: May 28, 2014.
