Dear Colleague,

Don L. Anderson passed away peacefully at his home in Cambria in the 
early morning of Tuesday, 2nd December, 2014.

Don was enormously productive during this, his last year of life, 
publishing a paper in PNAS (Anderson, D.L. & J.H. Natland, Mantle 
updrafts and mechanisms of oceanic volcanism, PNAS, doi: 
10.1073/pnas.1410229111 
<http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2014/09/05/1410229111.abstract>) 
and a posthumous paper in Science (Anderson, D.L. & S.K. King, Driving 
the Earth machine?, Science, 346, 1184-1185, 2014.

He also contributed to five chapters for a forthcoming GSA-AGU Don L. 
Anderson memorial volume 
<http://www.mantleplumes.org/TopPages/TheDLABook.html> that will be 
published early in the New Year, and he inspired or suggested several 
others. This book will commemorate his career and record his final 
contributions

Don is the lead convener of a Special Session a the forthcoming AGU Fall 
Meeting, "Theory of Earth". This session will now be hosted by his 
co-conveners. It will be held Friday 19th December, with a poster 
session in the morning and oral sessions in the afternoon:
