The pebble spit of La Mollière, which history started in the 1950s, is
located on the south shore of the Somme Bay (France). It is made of a
bigger pebble spit called the Somme Bay barrier. This study focuses on the
characterization of the spit internal architecture using geophysics data by
georadar (GPR). The fast developpement of this kind of sedimentary bodies
allowed the coupling of morphological evolution,with aerial photographs, to
internal structures. The result is a draft of a depositionnal and
morpho-stratigraphic evolution model which is specific to coarse coastal
barriers. The radar profiles interpretation has allowed to identify
characteristic facies of progradation and aggradation and to distinguish 3
morpho-sedimentary units on the spit. These units differ in the
relationship between cross-shore and long-shore dynamics and in the
presence of sandy banks in front of the pebble cords. As the spit is
characterized by a multitude of hooks, it has been possible to catch a
glimpse of the likely role of storms extreme events in diverging sediment
flows with a 3D prospecting approach.
