  Since the early 1970’s the dominant paradigm for the climate of the Last
Glacial Maximum in Australasia (and other regions) has been that it was
cold, dry and windy.  Yet, we still struggle to reconcile all the evidence
of past climates with this model.  In this presentation I will present a
new analysis of mega-rivers of the last ice age in Australia, a new
analysis of sand dune activity in Australia’s deserts with the (few)
available palaeo-ecological records.  I propose that temperature change
(together with atmospheric carbon dioxide), rather than precipitation or
wind strength, has been the greatest driver of environmental change in the
late Quaternary in Australia and discuss how this may be tested in the
other Southern Hemisphere continents.
