Since foundational studies on lake ecosystems, the approaches to
understanding these depositional systems and their paleoecology has greatly
improved. Advances include new lake basin models that differed from the
linear application of marine traits to lacustrine basins, and synthesis of
deep time lake basin geological and biotic records and how they changed
through time. Subsequently, detailed studies have documented
paleoecological assemblages that characterize each lake basin type.
Currently, detailed multiproxy studies of lake deposits have allowed ever
more precise reconstruction of deep time lacustrine ecosystems and the
major factors controlling these environments and ecosystems through time
and space. However, a remaining major challenge is modelling suitable
proxies for deep time systems and unraveling paleobiotic questions, such as
the effects of paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental factors on abundance
and richness of species and how they are recorded in lacustrine
depositional record. We invite the Mesozoic lacustrine ecosystem community
to contribute to this interdisciplinary session.
