Open Access *Arctic sediment routing during the Triassic: sinking the
Arctic Atlantis*
By Albina Gilmullina, Tore Grane Klausen, Anthony George Doré, Hallgeir
Sirevaag, Anna Suslova, and Christian Haug Eide
Opening of the Arctic Ocean has been the subject of much debate, and the
placement of terranes in the Early Mesozoic remains a crucial part of this
important discussion. Several continental terranes complicate the
palaeogeographical reconstruction. One such terrane is Crockerland, which
has been inferred to explain sediment distribution in the Arctic throughout
the Mesozoic…read more

Open Access *New insights into the structure, geology and hydrocarbon
prospectivity along the central-northern Corona Ridge, Faroe–Shetland Basin*
By Lucinda K. Layfield, Nick Schofield, David W. Jolley, Simon P. Holford,
Tudor-Remus Volintir, Ben A. Kilhams, David K. Muirhead, and Helen Cromie
The Faroe–Shetland Basin (FSB) is one of the only significant exploration
frontiers remaining on the UK Continental Shelf. Over half of the basin's
discovered reserves and resources lie along two intra-basinal highs, the
Corona Ridge and the Rona Ridge. In contrast to the Rona Ridge, the
central-northern Corona Ridge has received much less attention...read more

Open Access *High-resolution 3D geological modelling of heterogeneity in
poorly exposed glacial deposits using sedimentary and glaciotectonic
architectural element analysis: a case example from Sellafield in west
Cumbria, UK*
By Nicholas T. Smith, Jonathan W. Merritt, and Emrys R. Phillips
Three-dimensional modelling of superficial geology is challenging,
particularly for complex industrial sites such as the Sellafield nuclear
site, Cumbria, UK. A lithostratigraphic approach is sufficient to show
distribution of key units where only a general understanding of
hydrogeology is required…read more

Heat*
By Alison A. Monaghan, Luke Bateson, Adrian J. Boyce, Neil M.
Burnside, Rebecca Chambers, Julia R. de Rezende, Eilidh Dunnet, Paul A.
Everett, Stuart M. V. Gilfillan, Muhammad S. Jibrin, Gareth Johnson, Richard

Smith, Mike J. Spence, Vanessa Starcher, Helen Taylor-Curran, Christopher
H. Vane, Thomas Wagner and David B. Walls
Mine water geothermal energy could provide sustainable heating, cooling and
storage to assist in the decarbonisation of heat and achieving Net Zero
carbon emissions. However, mined environments are highly complex and we
currently lack the understanding to confidently enable a widespread,
cost-effective deployment of the technology…read more

analyses of the Nanfen Formation in the North China craton, and its
geodynamic implications*
By Xiujuan Bao, Hanqing Zhao, Shihong Zhang, Xinlei Li, Wengang Tan, Chao
Li, Huaichun Wu, Haiyan Li, and Tianshui Yang
Length of day (LOD) varies throughout Earth history, dictated in the long
term by the retreat of the Moon and growth of Earth's core. Reconstruction
of LOD in deep time has greatly benefited from analyses of the orbital
cycle from geological records. The Precambrian database, however, is very
limited…read more

*Read and Publish and discounted Open Access for authors*
The Geological Society’s open access read and publish agreements provide
seamless and unlimited open access publishing for corresponding authors at
participating institutions – including UK, Germany, Australia, New Zealand,
and others.
Under the terms, any article submitted by a corresponding author to a
hybrid Geological Society publication in the Lyell Collection through 2022,
which goes on to be accepted, will be published on an open access basis and
the fee waived i.e. no charge to the author.
This is an easy route to compliance under the UKRI open access policy,
which came into effect on 1 April 2022.
If your institution is not currently signed-up to a transformative read and
publish agreement but might be interested to do so, please do share details
with your librarian or reach out to your contact at GSL Publishing House.

*Transformative journals*
The hybrid journals published by the Society have Transformative Journal
status. These are journals that demonstrate an active commitment to
transitioning to a fully Open Access journal through a gradual increase in
published Open Access content. Authors are generally allowed to use their
funding to pay for APCs in these journals and comply with their funders’
Open Access policy even if their institution is not signed up to a
transformative read and publish agreement.

scope covers the broad spectrum of Earth science, and is headed up by Chief
Editor Dr Kathryn Goodenough (British Geological Survey).
The journal provides authors with a dedicated route to Open Access
publication, and welcomes engagement from both new and previous
contributors.
