El Instituto de Estudios Andinos "Don Pablo Groeber" (IDEAN, UBA-CONICET) y
el Departamento de Ciencias Geológicas (FCEyN, UBA) invitan a la comunidad
a participar de un nuevo capítulo del Ciclo de Charlas IDEAN 2024.

*Cenozoic evolution of the southern Central Andean foreland basin (~31–33
°S): Flexural wave migration from the Ramada to San Luis and beyond*
Chance B. Ronemus, University of Arizona

The Andes shape the South American continent by flexing the lithosphere,
creating a foreland basin that records mountain building. In San Juan
province, the Neogene stratigraphy is well-studied, but recent findings of
Paleogene deposits suggest an older foreland basin evolution. Still, the
relationship of the Paleogene stratigraphy to younger deposits and the
broader evolution of the Andes is unclear. Was there a Paleogene flexural
foreland basin? If so, was this basin discrete from its Neogene
counterpart? Or, are both part of a broader, migrating, Cenozoic flexural
basin system?
A synthesis of aspects of the Cenozoic Andean sedimentary record along a
transect spanning from the Cordillera de La Ramada to the distal Sierras
Pampeanas is presented. New field and zircon U-Pb data coupled with
flexural modeling support the inception of a foreland basin system in the
Late Eocene.
This study comprises a portion of the NSF-funded TrasANdean Great Orogeny
(TANGO) project, exploring the combined roles of the lithosphere,
asthenosphere, and lower mantle in mountain building.
