PhD/Post-doc position within the topic of magnetic petrology/mineralogy
and crustal magnetism

Two research scholarships (PhD/Post-doc) for the project "Sources and
nature of remanent magnetization and susceptibility: Keys to
interpretation of magnetic anomalies over continental lithosphere" are
available at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology,
Department of Geology and Mineral Resources. The positions are financed by
The Research Council of Norway, Space Program, and the Faculty of
Engineering Science and Technology.

Both the PhD and Post-doc projects will focus on understanding the nature
of crustal magnetization and work with the magnetic response of different
rock types. This will involve studying mineral intergrowths at the nano-
and -micron scale and rock-magnetic properties. These properties will be
correlated with magnetic anomalies at ground, airborne and satellite
scale. One of the primary project aims is to distinguish relative
contributions of induced and remanent magnetization to the lithospheric
field, which is a major objective of the upcoming SWARM satellite mission.
Depending on the candidate, the projects may be fine-tuned to focus on
mineralogy/petrology, or on the geophysical response of the rocks. Both
projects will require field work.

The Department of Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering owns and has
access to state-of-the- art laboratories, including magnetic instruments,
optical- scanning microscopes and electron microprobe, X-ray analytical
tools, a unique mineral-processing laboratory and access to TEMs and the
nanolab at NTNU.

For further information about the positions, please contact Professor
Suzanne McEnroe, phone +47-73-594806, email:

PhD Candidate - conditions and requirements:

The PhD project period is for 4 years with 25 % duties for the department.
In order to be considered for the PhD position, the applicant must have a
Master's degree within mineral exploration, mineralogy/petrology or
geophysics. The candidate must also qualify for admittance as a PhD
student at NTNU.

PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated
at wage level 50, gross NOK 416 300 before tax. There will be a 2 %
deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

The goal for the PhD Candidate is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will
engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires
approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from
the date of commencement. See http://www.ntnu.edu/ivt/phd for more
information.

Post-doc. Position - conditions and requirements:

The Post-doc position is for a period of 3 years. A completed PhD is
required prior to appointment.

Post-doctoral Fellows are normally remunerated at wage level 57 in the
State salary scale, gross NOK 468.000 per year (before tax). There will be
a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross
wage.

Conditions of appointment for both positions:

Engagement is done in accordance with "Regulation concerning terms and
conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow,
research fellow, research assistant and resident", given by the Ministry
of Education and Research of 19.07.2010.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force
concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The positions adhere to the
Norwegian Government's policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender.

According to the new Freedom of Information Act, information concerning
the applicant may be made public even if the applicant has requested not
to be included in the list of applicants.

An application inclusive CV, grade transcripts and other enclosures should
be sent electronically via this website. Mark your application with
ref.no. IVT- 52/13.

Application deadline: 24.05.2013.
