Vacant PhD position at the KIT

Within the DFG-funded project “Mineral magnetism of shocked ferrimagnetic
minerals” we invite application for a 3 year PhD position (75%).

This project focusses on two significant aspects of extreme conditions and
their effect on magnetic materials: (1) the consequence of shock waves on
magnetite and (2) the understanding of exotic magnetic minerals in iron
meteorites.

(1) In order to obtain general correlations between deformation structures
and magnetic properties, the specific magnetic properties and transition
temperatures as well as microstructures of experimentally shocked
magnetite ore will be compared with magnetite-bearing impact rocks of
different impact structures on Earth. The main focus of this study lies on
magneto-mineralogical investigations which combine low- and
high-temperature magnetic susceptibility and saturation isothermal
remanent magnetization with mineralogical and microstructural
investigations.

(2) The same methods will then be used for the investigation of iron
meteorites, whose magnetic properties are often controled by exotic
magnetic minerals like cohenite, schreibersite and daubreelite in addition
to the metal phases. Magnetic transition temperatures of those phases are
poorly documented in relation to their chemical composition as well as to
their crystallographic and microstructural configuration.

Qualifications:

The candidate must have a strong interest in experimental work on magnetic
materials. Basic knowledge of mineralogy and material science are
required. A successful candidate will study magnetic properties, such as
magnetic susceptibility and remanence at different temperatures, and apply
mineralogical methods such as X-ray diffraction, SEM, EBSD and TEM.
Complete applications must include a curriculum vitae and contact details
of two referees familiar with the academic ability of the candidate, and
should be emailed to PD Dr. Agnes Kontny (agnes.kontny en kit.edu).

A tentative starting date is August 1, 2013.
