*Post-doc opening at the Institute for Rock Magnetism on Speleothem
Magnetism and Uranium-Series Dating*

A postdoctoral position is available for the project "Paleomagnetic
Analysis of Speleothems and High Precision Dating of Geomagnetic
Records" at the Institute for Rock Magnetism at the University of
Minnesota (UMN). The position is funded by the Geophysics Program of the
National Science Foundation.

The project aims to develop speleothems as high-quality, continuous
high-resolution archives of geomagnetic field behavior and environmental
magnetic proxies. Speleothems can be dated with exceptional precision
using uranium-series techniques at the UMN Radiogenic Isotope
Laboratory, and their mineral fabrics, annual growth layers, and
magnetic mineral assemblages can be imaged at the UMN Characterization
Facility. It is expected that the successful candidate will help guide
the direction of future research, and will work closely with Josh
Feinberg, Larry Edwards, Jeff Dorale, and Ioan Lascu. Initial work will
investigate the fundamental processes involved in natural remanence
acquisition in speleothems, and establish chronological constraints for
geomagnetic field behavior wherever speleothems have been preserved. The
ideal candidate will have experience in both standard paleomagnetic
techniques and uranium-series dating; however, training is available for
candidates who are new to uranium-series methods.

The Institute of Rock Magnetism is a National Multi-User Facility
supported by the National Science Foundation and the University of
Minnesota and maintains one of the largest arrays of paleomagnetic and
rock magnetic instrumentation in the world. The UMN Radiogenic Isotope
Laboratory has a state-of-the-art clean room facility, a Thermo Neptune
MC-ICP-MS, and is an established leader in speleothem dating.

The Post-doc position is for a period of 2 years and a completed PhD in
a related field is required prior to appointment.

Applications should be sent to Josh Feinberg (feinberg en umn.edu
<mailto:feinberg en umn.edu>) and should include a CV, a statement of
research background and interests, and contact information for at least
three potential references.

*Application deadline: October 31, 2013 or until the position is filled.*

The University of Minnesota is a very large research-oriented
institution located along the Mississippi River in the heart of the Twin
Cities just a two hour drive from the karst landscape of SE Minnesota.
The Department of Earth Sciences offers B.S./B.A., M.S., and Ph.D.
degree programs (http://www.geo.umn.edu <http://www.geo.umn.edu/>). UMN
is an AA/EEO employer.
