Hola Augusto,

Dear colleagues,
In collaboration with Frontiers in Earth Science, section Geomagnetism
and Paleomagnetism, we are organizing a Research Topic titled "Magnetic
Records of Extreme Geological Eventsâ€, hosted by Eric Font, Alexandra
Abrajevitch, Fabio Florindo. As host editor, I would like to encourage
you to contribute to this topic. Details are provided here:
http://www.frontiersin.org/geomagnetism_and_paleomagnetism/researchtopics/_magnetic_records_of_extreme_g/2843
Note that Frontiers is always eager to consider solutions for any
barriers to publication. Authors can apply for a fee waiver on the basis
of financial grounds, by following the instructions described in the
“Grants and Waivers†section at
http://www.frontiersin.org/about/PublishingFeesand then sending an email
to waivers en frontiersin.org <mailto:waivers en frontiersin.org> (ideally
before, or immediately after, submission). Please be aware that
Frontiers gives priority to developing countries, and that you should
allow up to a week for Frontiers to review and reply to your request."
I would be delighted if you considered participating in this Research Topic.
Please note that the deadline for manuscript submission is on: Sep 25, 2014
With best regards,
Eric Font
Guest Associate Editor, Frontiers in Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism

*Informations about Frontiers*
Frontiers, a Swiss open-access publisher, recently partnered with
*Nature Publishing* Group to expand its researcher-driven Open Science
platform. Frontiers articles are rigorously peer-reviewed, can be
disseminated freely and are widely read by your colleagues and by the
broader scientific and medical research communities.
The idea behind a research topic is to create an organized,
comprehensive collection of several contributions, as well as a forum
for discussion and debate. Contributions can be articles describing
original research, methods, hypothesis & theory, opinions, etc.
We have created a homepage on the Frontiers website (Frontiers in Earth
Science, section Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism) where all articles
will appear after peer-review and where participants in the topic will
be able to hold relevant discussions:
http://www.frontiersin.org/Geomagnetism_and_Paleomagnetism/researchtopics/_Magnetic_Records_of_Extreme_G/2843.
Frontiers will also compile an e-book, as soon as all contributing
articles are published, that can be used in classes, be sent to
foundations that fund your research, to journalists and press agencies,
or to any number of other organizations.
As such, a manuscript accepted for publication incurs a publishing fee,
which varies depending on the article type. Research Topic manuscripts
receive a significant discount on publishing fees. Please take a look at
this fee table: http://www.frontiersin.org/about/PublishingFees.
Once published, your articles will remain free to access for all
readers, and will be indexed in PubMed and other academic archives. As
an author in Frontiers, you retain the copyright to your own papers and
figures.

*Common Questions/Concerns*:
- /Impact Factor/: Because Thomson ISI requires *at least three complete
years*of publishing before issuing an impact factor for a specific
journal or indexation into their Web of Science, we currently do not
have an impact factor. Impact factors are issued for the preceding year
involving complex criteria that evaluate the previous three years'
citations. That being said, Frontiers and other open access publishers
are offering alternative ways of truly assessing the impact of the
journal and specific articles as well, through what's called "*article
level metrics*" and this is where the future lies. Already, an article's
individual impact, measured by downloads, abstract hits, citations,
country and website of origin is readily available to Frontiers users,
and within two or three years these metrics will be the norm, rather
than the exception, in academic evaluation.
In addition, let me also explain that all articles published in
Frontiers in Earth Science are Indexed in: PubMed, PubMed Central,
Google Scholar and other relevant databases.
- /Publishing Fees/:
"While some article types (e.g. /opinion articles/) are free of charge,
most of our article types incur publishing fees
<http://www.frontiersin.org/Plant_Science/fees>when accepted. This is
indicated in the call for participation you received for this research
topic. However, we discount the publishing fees quite steeply for
Research Topics, with the final fee being between 575 for short (e.g.
/Mini Reviews/) and 960 euros for full articles (e.g. /Reviews/ and
/Original Research/).
Currently, this is the only way to make open-access publishing work
economically.
Frontiers is always eager to consider solutions for any barriers to
publication. Authors can apply for a fee waiver on the basis of
financial grounds, by following the instructions described in the
“Grants and Waivers†section at
http://www.frontiersin.org/about/PublishingFeesand then sending an email
to waivers en frontiersin.org <mailto:waivers en frontiersin.org>(ideally
before, or immediately after, submission). Please be aware that
Frontiers gives priority to developing countries, and that you should
allow up to a week for Frontiers to review and reply to your request."
