Imminent degradation of three USGS Magnetic Observatories is distressing.
See email below. Can anyone convince Air Force not to withdraw 25% of
Geomagnetism budget?

Faithfully, David

> Because of a budget shortfall, the USGS will suspend maintenance on
three of its 14 magnetic observatories, beginning in April 2019. The
three observatories are located in Shumagin (AK), Fresno (CA) and Bay
St. Louis (MS). The operation of the other eleven USGS observatories
and the provision of quality-controlled data to users will continue
uninterrupted.

> This year, as you know, funding from a federal partner to the USGS is
ending after more than 14 years of continuous support. This funding
loss is 25% of the amount needed for the operation of the USGS magnetic
observatory network and data management activities. It thus requires
trimming operational costs and, hence, ending maintenance of the three
observatories listed above, which have been assessed as lower priority.
Budget-wise, our decision considered the FY19 appropriation for the
program and the President’s FY20 budget request for it, released
yesterday. As you reported yesterday, the good news in that request is
that it requests support for the Geomagnetism program at the FY19
funding level—after two years of requests to eliminate finding for
it—and it requests funds for continuing the magnetotelluric survey of
CONUS.
