Hello all,

the initiative by Daniel is of course excellent and much appreciated, and
surely the meeting in Rio de Janeiro could be fantastic.
I would only like to know about the opinion of our colleagues from Chile
and what happened in that context. They first lost the meeting because of
the 2019 unrest in Chile and since 2020 I guess because of the COVID
pandemia. This was a big loss for them, but also to several of us; I lost
about US$2,500 in air tickets, hotel reservations, etc.
Has the LATINMAG presidency (?) ever checked about renewing that project or
have the colleagues from Chile ever indicated their interest to do so or
rather not? For the rest of us, this would be useful information!

Also I would like to know how our lab is or will be represented in
LATINMAG, due to the murder of Roberto Molina (our representative) almost
exactly a year ago? This is something that is obviously never anticipated
and maybe not considered in the statutes, but there should be some action
taken by the presidency (?) after some time. Otherwise one could suspect
that this is not a serious organization (or rather a typical latin
american organization?). Just my personal appreciation, which could be
biased. Hopefully I will be corrected.

>From there, I would like to propose some important changes in LATINMAG for
the near future. My impression is that LATINMAG has been dominated by few
colleagues during the last about 20 years, and that this should end. Let
the young people take over! Young is relative but to me it means << 50, the
future of paleomagnetism. Which would be great for LATINMAG, as the youth
could carry out new initiatives to increment latin american cooperation,
beyond previous interests. Such of course are typical in our academic
environments, but my faith belongs to the young who have not been involved
much so far. These young colleagues are everywhere, just let us give them a
chance to define their future and on the side that of LATINMAG. Otherwise,
I guess that LATINMAG may be extinguished like the dinosaurs, even without
an impact...

Happy New Year to all, be the (magnetic) force with you! (which could be
repulsive or attractive, ho ho ho; couldn't resist that mention...)
Harald
