Dear Cathy,

I found out from Nicholas Swanson-Hysell that you coordinate a paleomag
related list serv.

I’m contacting you because we are dismantling Ken Verosub's lab and there
is some equipment that may be of use to the Paleomag community (maybe some
only for parts; others that are actually still working), and we’d like to
get the word out before we just turn everything over to the campus surplus
department.

Would you be able to share the following email with the Paleomag listserv?
Sincerely,
Magali

-----
Dear Paleo-Mag Community,

The Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at UC Davis is dismantling the
former paleomagnetism laboratory from Professor Emeritus Ken Verosub. In
talking with Ken, it seems that some of the Paleomag equipment could be of
use to others still operating paleomagnetism labs. Some of the equipment is
no longer operational, but maybe useful for parts, while some equipment is
still operational:

- MicroMag, alternating field gradient magnetometer (operational, in good
condition)
- Thermal Demagnetizer - (operational)
- KappaBridge (not functional)
*- *three-axis, automated, long-core cryogenic magnetometer (vacuum failed
in 2017)
- three-axis single sample cryogenic magnetometer (has not been used since
1995)

I’ve created a google folder with PDFs for each piece of equipment
including pictures of the equipment.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/17UBNaA3469i7URF-HgQWva5Y-EE7lDAj?usp=sharing
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/17UBNaA3469i7URF-HgQWva5Y-EE7lDAj?usp=sharing__;!!Mih3wA!CDk7ev2YGqCqLkU5YuBSU9ThjvdiLFinp1PWTTc9xm58K458_edhxmKAMWFDAuKv96yAl-TCY6_AMo_m6TgOq-g$>
That folder also includes a summary document, with Ken’s explanation of the
vintage and current “state” of the equipment.

If you are interested in a piece of equipment, you would need to pay for
and arrange for the equipment removal (the packaging, pick-up and
shipping). Our department would work with you to provide the information
you need to arrange for removal and we would help to coordinate access to
the lab for pick-up by the shipping company.

We are aiming to have this equipment removed from the lab within the next
few months.
*If you are seriously considering any of the equipment, please contact us
by October 5, 2024.*

If you are interested in any of this equipment, please contact the
Department CAO, Jamie Brannan (brannan en ucdavis.edu) and include the
following information:

- What is the name of piece of equipment you are interested in?
- How much would you be willing to pay for the piece of equipment (in
addition to the removal costs)… this is likely only needed for equipment
that is still operational, however the university will try to ascertain
worth before letting us “sell” for cost of removal, so its good for us to
know what your budgetary limitations are.
- What is your contact information (Name, Position, Department, University,
phone number, e-mail).
- Questions you have about the equipment.

Sincerely,
Magali Billen
