Estimada Comunidad LatinMag,

Thermoviscous Magnetic Relaxation as a Thermochronological Tool: A Case Study from the Nama Foreland (Damara Orogen, southern Namibia)

The integration of rock magnetic and paleomagnetic data offers a powerful yet underexplored approach to constraining thermal histories of sedimentary basins and orogenic belts. In this study, we apply magnetic methods as a thermochronological proxy to investigate the post-orogenic evolution of the Damara Orogenic System in southern Namibia. Drill-core samples from the Nama Group, a terminal Ediacaran siliciclastic–carbonate succession, were subjected to detailed rock magnetic, paleomagnetic, and Raman spectroscopic analyses. A pervasive reverse-polarity remanent component, carried by single-domain magnetite with unblocking temperatures between 320 and 450 °C, was interpreted as a thermoviscous remagnetization acquired during regional low-grade metamorphism. Raman-derived peak temperatures conditions (300–350 °C) and magnetic thermochronometry modeling based on Néel relaxation theory suggest remanence acquisition during orogenic heating and progressive locking during post-tectonic cooling at ~1 °C/Myr. These results support a unified thermotectonic model in which widespread Cambro-Ordovician remagnetization across West Gondwana reflects isostatic rebound and crustal stabilization following the Pan-African–Brasiliano orogenies. Our findings highlight the potential of paleomagnetic recorders to serve as thermochronometers in sedimentary successions lacking conventional mineral-based geochronological systems.
