        Dear all,

The next “Microtectonics” course by Cees Passchier will be organized from March 23-27.2012 at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.

The course is open for Master and PhD students and researchers, who are interested to learn about rock microstructures and their application to structural geology.

The course content will be based on the book “Microtectonics” by Passchier, C. W. & Trouw, R. A. J., 2005 and, the main topics are:
•    flow in rocks on a micro scale
•    intracrystalline structures
•    strain rate, vorticity and their influence on microstructure
•    foliations and lineations
•    brittle and ductile shear zones
•    shear sense indicators, veins, strains shadows and fringes, metamorphic reaction rims, porphyroblasts and their internal structure
•    structural analysis using microtectonics.

It is also possible, within reasonable limits, to bring your own thin sections and discuss the interpretation of their microstructure.

The costs for the whole course will be 270 Euro for students and 350 Euro for all other participants. The costs include all course material, coffee breaks and an icebreaker party. Participants can purchase the “Microtectonics” book at a more favorable price.
