Colleagues and potential students, We have funding at the University of Maine for several new graduate students. We prefer Ph.D. students, but would also consider students applying for an MS degree. An MS degree is not required to pursue a Ph.D., but students coming in with a B.Sc. need to be very well prepared and motivated. Our graduate students typically take on inter-disciplinary projects that involve collaboration with geologists and geophysicists from other institutions, and with our colleagues in UMaine’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. Most projects contain a mix of field work, analytical data collection (e.g., SEM/EBSD/CL, EPMA), computational analysis (e.g., FE, Matlab, etc) and toolbox development (Matlab). Potential students need to have strong academic backgrounds. Interests in physics, math or numerical methods are desirable. We address a wide range of problems with common footing in the mechanical behavior of Earth. Project possibilities include: (1) relationships between microstructure and rheology in the middle to lower continental crust, (2) transient permeability arising from thermally- and/or fluid-pressure-induced fracturing, (3) microstructural/structural controls on seismic anisotropy, (4) shallow to deep coupling of stress and deformation in seismogenic faults, (5) the role of chemical processes in strain localization, (6) transfer of fluids in Earth (including magma, oil, water), (7) the development and effects of elastic and viscous anisotropy, and several others. If interested, please contact me directly (please do not use the REPLY button). Cheers - Scott **********************************************Scott E.
