The Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM,
http://ingenieria.uchile.cl/) at the University of Chile is the
Chilean leading institution in Engineering and Earth Sciences,
performing world-class research and offering undergraduate and
graduate programs. The Faculty holds more than a dozen academic
departments, including Geophysics (www.dgf.uchile.cl), Geology
(www.geologia.uchile.cl), and Civil Engineering
(www.ingcivil.uchile.cl). Earth Science research at the
University of Chile has been recently ranked among the World’s
100 best programs in Earth Science, according to QS World
Universities Ranking 2012.
The FCFM has recently created an inter-departmental,
inter-disciplinary program on Seismotectonics and Seismic Hazard.
Under this program, the FCFM is seeking candidates for two
permanent positions on:
-Earthquake Seismology: Seismology, Seismic Source and Geodesy
-Tectonics: Neotectonics, Paleoseismology and Geodesy
The successful candidates will be expected to carry out
innovative, independently funded, research at an international level
on Seismology, Geodesy, Neotectonics and Paleoseismology related to
convergence subduction contact problems, in close collaboration
with researchers from the Geophysics, Geology and Civil Engineering
Departments. In addition, candidates are expected to teach at the
undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervise/examine
undergraduate, and M.Sc. and Ph.D students. Spanish proficiency is
desirable, but not required at the time of the application.
Teaching experience is not a requisite but it will be considered as
a plus.
Applicants should electronically submit a statement of academic
interests regarding research, teaching and outreach activities to be
developed over the next years, as well as two letters of
recommendation, to Dr. Carlos Palacios, Academic Director at FCFM
(sediraca en ing.uchile.cl). Salary varies according to hierarchy
starting at about US$50,000 per year for Assistant Professors, which
corresponds roughly to 3 to 4 times the Chilean per capita average
income. Specific questions should be addressed to Dr. Gabriel Vargas
(gvargas en ing.uchile.cl) and Dr. Eduardo Contreras-Reyes
(econtreras en dgf.uchile.cl).
The selection of candidates will be made upon merit and it
follows the rules of public administration in Chile. The process
considers three main steps. A first selection is made by Faculty
members at the Departments involved in this program. A prioritized
list is then submitted to a committee at the Faculty level who
together with the Departments conduct a revision of the applicants CVs
and academic proposals, including interviews in situ or via the
Internet. Finally, the Faculty committee submits a proposal to the
corresponding board at the University level. The whole process
will take a few months. The selected candidates are expected to
start in their new positions by mid-2013.
Deadline for applications: January 15, 2013.
