We have a PhD position available, starting from September/2015, in the
frame of the DFG Infrastructure Priority Programme 1006 – International
Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) “Faulting processes in
seismogenic active faults – Microstructural, mineralogical and geochemical
characterization of drill core samples from several international drilling
projects�


*Tasks:*
The successful candidate will perform microstructural, mineralogical and
geochemical studies on fresh core material from several international
drilling projects that penetrate active faults (San Andreas Fault/SAFOD –
USA, Gulf of Corinth/DGLab – Greece, Alpine fault/DFDP-New Zealand)  using
optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission
electron microscopy (TEM), and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements.
The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the University
of California-Berkeley (Prof. R. Wenk) and the University of Otago, New
Zealand (Dr. V.G. Toy).


*Qualifications:*
Applicants should hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in a discipline of
geosciences with strong background in structural geology. Expertise in
microstructural and geochemical analyses will be considered as an
advantage, but not a necessity for the application. The ability and
willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment
and a fluent knowledge of the English language are required. Additional
language skills in German would be an asset.
