Ph.D. opportunity to study particle aggregation in volcanic plumes
From: Costanza Bonadonna <Costanza.Bonadonna en unige.ch>
**********************************************************************************
The Fond National Suisse is supporting a three-year project at
Université de Genève to investigate aggregation processes in volcanic
plumes. Part of the funding will support a PhD project that will be
focused on the development of laboratory and field experiments for the
study of both dry and wet aggregation. Laboratory experiments will run
to study particle collisions and aggregation using a vertical wind
tunnel which has been built in Geneva for the study of particle
settling. Field observations will be made to measure settling velocity
of particle clusters in situ (mainly using Doppler radar).
As a result, we are looking for an enthusiastic, independent and
dynamic PhD student with strong quantitative skills. Experience in the
laboratory would be favoured but it is not necessary, as the PhD
candidate will have the opportunity to acquire laboratory skills
during the project. The project will be supervised by Costanza
Bonadonna (Université de Genève) and Jeremy Phillips (University of
Bristol) with collaboration from the Ecole d'ingénieurs de Genève
(CMEFE - Groupe de compétences en mécanique des fluides et procédés
énergétiques). The PhD student will work in close contact with another
PhD student who is currently developing a Cellular Automata model for
the description of particle aggregation.
The Ph.D. project will start in September 2009 and be based in Geneva.
Please pass this information on to any interested suitably-qualified
candidate. For informal discussion, please contact Costanza Bonadonna
