Dear Colleagues,

Once again the US Geomagnetism Program is threatened. Please take time to
articulate its importance to your work as instructed below, so that we can
push back and ensure continued access to US geomagnetic data, ongoing
contributions to IGRF modeling and all the other work these data enable.

Cathy

> It has come to my attention that President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2019
budget once again calls for the elimination of the USGS Geomagnetism
Program, which among other highly negative aspect would also would mean
the closing down of the USGS magnetic observatory network. There was a
similar threat to shutdown of the program during the Fiscal Year 2018
deliberations, but community action played a role in overturning that
decision. The URL for the observatories can be found at:

an immediate threat to the continued operation of the observatory at
Honolulu.

> In order to demonstrate the need for a) continued support of the
existing observatory network, and b) the rationale for the expansion of
the network beyond current baseline levels, I would welcome you to send
me a brief email stating the following:
>
> 1) Your name, institution/company, and email address
> 2) Why geomagnetic observatory data in general is important to you; how
you make use of these data
> 3) Why USGS magnetic observatory data specifically is important
> 4) (optional) Rationale for growing the number of observatories
> 5) Any other comments

assemble the responses and if there is sufficient support shown, I will
organize a community response, including but not limited to an EOS
article and other follow-on actions.

efforts to push back against these negative forces can work.
